Today Lea Bridge is a major route through North London between Whipps Cross and Clapton, but in the Sporting Magazine of 1843 the results from races held in this area of Leyton were published. The inaugural 2 day meeting took place from Tuesday 18th July to Wednesday 19th July 1843, opening with the Lea Bridge Stakes over 2 miles which was won by Mr Game’s Little Vivian. On the second day the Marsh Stakes saw Chummy beat Sambo Sutton and Smiler, while the concluding Victoria Prize went to Mr Dixon’s The Star. Such was the success of the meeting that an Autumn Houghton meeting was staged from Wednesday 20th to Friday 22nd September 1843 in fields owned by Mr Teale. A summer meeting took place in 1844 before a second, and final, three day meeting was staged from Tuesday 8th to Thursday 10th October 1844. On day one the Lea Bridge Stakes was won by Mr Ling’s Botherem, while the later West Essex Stakes went to Molly Mogs for Mr Cook. The concluding race on the final day was the Tradesmen and Boothkeepers Cup which fell to Mystery for Mr Benbow. |
